Citroen Basalt enters the Indian market as the first mass-market ICE Coupe SUV, priced aggressively against rivals.

Citroen has launched the Basalt Coupe SUV in India, starting at ₹7.99 lakh (ex-showroom). This model is Citroen's first mass-market coupe SUV and features two engine options: a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol and a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol. It comes equipped with modern features like a 10.25-inch touchscreen, six airbags, and LED projector headlamps, offering a stylish and competitively priced option in the compact SUV segment.

Design and Features:


The Basalt’s design reflects Citroen's latest styling cues, borrowing elements from its global models and taking inspiration from the C3 Aircross and C5 Aircross. The exterior features a sleek receding roofline typical of coupe SUVs, along with a piano black front grille and 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels. LED projector headlamps, LED tail lamps, and a distinct greenhouse design further enhance its visual appeal.

Inside, the Basalt offers a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with a seven-inch digital instrument cluster. Additional features include automatic climate control, rear air conditioning vents, and a multifunctional steering wheel with mounted controls. The vehicle is also equipped with safety features such as six airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), a rear parking camera, and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

Performance and Engine Options:


The Citroen Basalt is powered by two engine options: a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 80 bhp and 115 Nm of torque, and a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine generates 109 bhp & up to 205 Nm of torque. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual for the naturally aspirated engine and a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic for the turbocharged variant. Citroen claims fuel efficiency figures of 18 kmpl for the naturally aspirated engine, 19.5 kmpl for the turbo petrol manual, and 18.7 kmpl for the automatic.

Rivals and Future Prospects:


The Citroen Basalt does not currently have any direct competitors in its pricing range, but it will soon be up against the Tata Curvv ICE, which is expected to go on sale in September 2024. The Basalt offers a distinctive product in the shape of an inexpensive coupe SUV, making it an indirect competitor with well-liked compact SUVs like the Volkswagen Taigun, Hyundai Creta, and Kia Seltos.
