Volkswagen showed off their very new creation, the Taigun concept at the Sao Paulo Motor Show in October 2012. It's based on the small cars of VW the Up! and the Polo. The New Small Platform(NSP) with 3.86 meters length and 1.73 meters width, the car is 83 mm wider and 81mm taller than its smaller siblings. Taigun has a wheelbase of 50mm.
The four seat concept car is powered by a 1-litre TSI (turbocharged stratified injection) engine with 110PS at 5000rpm power and a torque of 175 Nm. The engine is based on latest EA211 series and it make use of direct fuel injection plus turbocharging technology. The interior of Tiagun is simple and spacious. The central infotainment system can pair with a majority of smart phones.
Tiagun is styled to compete with its SUV siblings. Tiagun comes with underbody protection and roof rails with LED spotlights. The 1473mm wide tracks at front and rear, 17-inch alloys with 205/50 R17 tyres and high ground clearance gives stylish SUV look.
Taigun facilitates good driving position. Boot space is barely adequate at 280 litres but increases to 987 litres with the rear seats down. Taigun comes with an active safety is the ESC electronic stabilization programme. The car weighs 185 kg and it has a top speed of 186 km/hr.
Volkswagen had earlier dropped its plan to bring the Up! small car to India since it is infeasible to the Indian market, Still there is scope for the cars based on same platform. Ulrich Hackenberg, the member of management of Volkswagen said that they were studying on a compact SUV on the Indian market.
