Audi launched the S5 Sportback, the first sportback in its segment, in Indi. Powered by a 3.0-litre TFSI quattro engine, the sportback is claimed to be efficient and comes with a myriad of provisions. Mr Joe King, Head, Audi India, said, “The Audi S5 Sportback is an extremely attractive proposition for customers desiring sportiness with practicality. The Audi S5 Sportback brings cutting edge technology in an efficient, sporty and powerful style while ensuring an exhilarating driving experience with no compromise on fuel efficiency." It’s a milder version of the RS5 that does away with an alphabet and two cylinders, but adopts a supercharged V6 and four very stylish frame-less doors. Here, 'milder' is a relative term. The S5 still churns out 330bhp and 440Nm of spin from its 3.0-litre V6, teamed with a 7-speed S-tronic gearbox that sends power to all four corners.
It’s not just a sportback version of a powerful sedan. With all the brushed aluminium parts and almost coupe-like styling, the S5 is here to make you feel special, inside and out. The Audi S5 Sportback gets a radiator grille with platinum grey insert and horizontal chrome struts, a honeycomb grille in the air inlets with dual chrome trim and angular fog lights, and body-coloured sill mouldings. The grille sports an S5 badge, while the front fenders house a V6 T badge. Inside, the Audi S5 gets matt-brushed inlays, a three-spoke, leather-covered, flat-bottomed steering wheel with shift paddles, and Alcantara upholstery. Its supercharged 3.0-litre TFSI quattro unit promises 328.5hp along with a torque of 440Nm. Mated to an S-tronic dual-clutch transmission, the Audi S5 can go from standstill to 100Km in 5.1 seconds on its way to a top-speed of 250Km.
With its sportback styling, sporty performance and a dash of practicality which includes enough room for four adults and their luggage, the S5 ticks the right boxes. The Audi S5's features list includes the standard Bang & Olufsen Sound System, MMI Navigation Plus with a 17.78cm colour monitor, Audi Drive Select with Comfort, Auto, Dynamic, Efficiency and Individual modes, and Audi Parking System Plus with rear-view camera. For safety, the Audi S5 gets 8 airbags, anti-theft wheel bolts with a rotation ring and code key.
Audi is asking for is ₹62.95 lakh. For that kind of money, the S5 seems like a great deal. In Audi’s hierarchy, the S5 sits between the S4 which is identical mechanically and the RS5, but costs a little more than the sedan and is almost half of what Audi is asking for the coupe. Plus, it’s not just a sportback version of a powerful sedan. With all the brushed aluminium parts and almost coupe-like styling, the S5 should introduce you to the world of Coupe.
