Eicher, the Gurgaon based automotive manufacturer in its joint venture with Polaris automobiles, an American auto maker, specializing in multi-utility vehicles, have come up with a utility vehicle for India, known as the Multix.
Multix is a four-wheeler utility vehicle that Eicher says, was aimed at an untapped segment comprising independent businessmen with an estimated population of 5.8 crore. Being a utility vehicle, it is poised to do much more than a normal pick up truck. It can easily seat five people with luggage or can be converted to create luggage space of around 1918 litres. Multix is powered by a 511cc diesel engine and the engine was wholly developed by Greaves Cotton. Another interesting bit of the Multix is the power-take-off port that can be used to operate secondary devices such as powerful lights and pumps, using a 3kW output from the Multix.
The JV with Polaris has enabled a significant amount of technological help and this can clearly be seen from the all-independent ProRide Suspension and because of this the ground clearance stands at a staggering 335mm. A tubular frame structure acts as the skeleton on the Multix and also gets a rollover protection system. Hopefully the Multix would be able to meet the needs of various customers who intend to look for a suitable vehicle that can take them where they want to go and be reliable enough to get the job done.
With all the interesting bits and pieces, pricing was expected to be on the higher side. However, Eicher has cleverly and quite surprisingly given it a starting price of only Rs 2.32 Lac and the top end variant would cost Rs 2.72 Lac (ex-showroom Jaipur). The Multix comes in two variants and offers four color options.
